Delaware was originally inhabited by several groups of Native Americans. In 1631, Dutch traders settled, followed by Swedish settlers, and Delaware became one of the Thirteen Colonies participating in the American Revolution. In 1787, Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, becoming known as The First State.
Since most of Delaware is in the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the ocean effects and moderates the climate, with the southern portion being milder and enjoying a longer growing season. Temperatures vary widely in the state, with an all-time high of 110˚F and an all-time low of -17˚F.
