Attracting Younger Visitors To Your Museum

Regardless of where your museum is located, it is hard not to notice more and more younger quilters are in the field.  The modern guild movement and modern quilting is growing fast. Also, the demographics of the quilters have changed in the last five years (read QuiltingHub Demographics). If you want to take advantage of this, you first need to understand the market.  Younger quilters think and act completely different than we may be accustomed. Not knowing how they think and act can hurt our businesses. Here are some thoughts on attracting younger patrons.

A private discussion has begun in the QuiltingHub Quilting Museum Forum, which is only for QuiltingHub museum members. This keeps the discussion private and away from the patrons. If you are already a member of QuiltingHub, click the forum.  If you are considering membership, visit QuiltingHub membership benefits and fees for more information.  Either way, here are some highlights of the first few points of the younger patrons.

Younger quilters (generally those who use computers and smart phones) have some general characteristics:

The Younger Patrons
Older (What we are use to)
  • Search the internet for museums & information.
  • Ask friends or read books.
  • Refer friends electronically.
  • Refer friends verbally.
  • Use online ratings & likes to decide to visit.
  • Use friend referrals to decide to visit.
  •

    In Summary

Young quilters use your web presence to find, decide to visit, and rate you. Their sources of information are Facebook, your website, and quilt museum search sites like QuiltingHub. If you are not on the web and not on a museum list, they do not know you exist. If you are on the web, but have few likes or ratings; you will most likely be ignored. The way to fix this is to do the following:

    • Have an active Facebook page.
    • Have an active website.
    • Be on museum list sites (like QuiltingHub).
    • Get likes & ratings on Facebook & QuiltingHub.

    Additional Comments to QuiltingHub Members

Some museums get more traffic from QuiltingHub than others. When we delve into why that is, we discover that museums need to have a complete listing, enter their events, and get their rating/likes up. To do this, we suggest the following:

    • Click the Page Completion Guide on your detail page.
    • Enter your events, if you have them. This is very important.
    • Get your QuiltingHub shops page likes and ratings up. This is VERY important.

If you have not done these things, you may see lackluster performance depending on your area.  If you have done it, you have success.
