Picture Window Reverse Applique

Annie McHugs introduced a new ruler tool, Picture Windows Reverse Applique, at the Houston Quilt Market this year.

OK, so the introduction of a new ruler isn't that remarkable, but this one is. My local quilt shop owner, Laural, was able to attend the "Take 'n Teach" for this product at Quilt Market and immediately brought her sample to me.

The idea for this new tool came to designer Jerriann Massey literally in the clouds. An enriching combination of the traditional Dresden plate with the reverse applique picture window brings new levels of creativity to the quilts.

The tool is amazingly easy to use. This pillow by one of Jerriann's grandchildren shows what a little sewing and a little creativity can do.

The tool doesn't have just one type of window. The window pieces pop in and out of the tool depending on how you want to use them. As someone who loves wool applique, I could immediately see wonderful ways to display my handwork in the windows!

As Laural and I began to bounce ideas off one another, we saw images of memory quilts, travel quilts, quilts with antique lace centers, quilts with barn quilts, and many more. Jerriann's sample quilt shows more than 24 window configurations, but she has found 8 more. An easy to use and teach tool such as this one, is a real bonus for quilt shop owners. Within a week, Laural had scheduled a class at her shop and produced this next sample.

Me? I'm auditioning some baby owls in a tree cavity. What do you think?
