How To Make An Embroidered Towel

Making an embroidered, customized towel is super easy and a great gift. There are plenty of embroidery patterns, both free and for a nominal fee, to choose from. So let's check out the steps to creating an embroidered towel.

How To Make An Embroidered Towel

Many companies offer towel "blanks". These are predominantly kitchen-style towels, often with a colorful border or contrasting fabric near the edge. Some of these towel blanks will come with a pre-sewn loop at one end, if you desire to hang the finished towel from a hook.

Towel Close up

When looking at the blanks, chose one that will have ample space for your embroidered design. Many finished products look great folded in thirds, with the design only showing in the middle third. Others, prefer to display the towel by folding in half and having a larger area to embroider on.

Towel Backside

Once you have chosen a towel blank, wash it. While some brands will indicate they have been "pre-shrunk", I don't take chances and wash everything. By doing this, if the towel is going to shrink, better now than after the embroidered design is in place.

Towel

Press your towel blank and determine where you will place the embroidered design. Hoop the towel using a stabilizer. Most designs can be done using a medium weight tear-away stabilizer. Try to avoid an embroidery design with too many stitches as it will make the towel stiff.

Towel Embridery Backside

Embroider your towel, choosing thread colors that match the design and the towel. Once done, unhoop the towel and carefully remove the excess stabilizer. Fold the towel to properly display the embroidered design and package for your gift giving.

Towel 2

Often these designs are so ornate and customized that the towel is used solely for display. The backside of the embroidered towel is often rigid and unsuitable for actual use as a towel in the kitchen. But these towels look great on display.

The recipient of an embroidered towel will appreciate the gift, knowing it was made from the heart and customized for them. So grab a towel blank and start embroidering!
