The QuiltCon is a yearly event presented by the Modern Quilt Guild that consists of lectures, classes, quilt displays, and vendors. This year, it will be held in Phoenix, AZ, between February 20 and 23, 2025. It is not too late to plan to attend this fantastic quilting event.
The Modern Quilt Guild has over 18,000 members worldwide and is focused on supporting and encouraging " the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community." Modern quilters use bold colors, improvisational piecing, and both contrast and negative space.
Various instructors and designers offer classes, lectures, and workshops. Many of the workshops last all day (six hours) to allow ample time to work on the quilts. Over the four days, 27 lectures are scheduled. Attendees can attend all the lectures for one day or buy a pass for all four days.
Vendors run the gamut literally from A to Z, with over 125 shops, fabric makers, and designers on the floor. This is a great opportunity to see machines up close and talk to the manufacturer representatives. Designers can answer questions about their patterns or fabric collections. Of course, plenty of patterns, notions, and threads will be available to buy.
Naturally, QuiltCon will be hosting a gallery of hundreds of quilts. There will be seven major awards, including Best in Show and a new category—the Modern Quilt Guild (MQG) Breakthrough Award. There will be an additional ten categories of judged quilts, with $1,00 awarded for first place in each category.
When judging the quilts, the experts look at design, workmanship, and quilting, with some categories including additional specifications.
Since the event is being held in downtown Phoenix at the Phoenix Convention Center, there are plenty of hotel and lodging choices, and the Sky Harbor Airport is a short trip away. The weather should include plenty of sunshine, and baseball's spring training also kicks off that weekend.
While many workshops and events are sold out, a wide variety of offerings are still available. You can always take a chance and get placed on a wait list for a class you are interested in and hope there are last-minute cancellations.
QuiltCon always offers an eye-opening experience with plenty of "ohs and ahs." It can be inspiring to see how others have used fabrics and imagination to create stunning quilts to marvel at.
