The Modern Quilt Guild held its yearly QuiltCon show this year in Phoenix, AZ. Between February 20 and 23, 2025, the event offered hundreds of workshops and lectures. It also held a four-day vendor show, allowing attendees to check out the latest fabrics and patterns from leading quilters and manufacturers.
A highlight is seeing the quilts on display. Quilts can be entered in twelve different categories, and seven are selected for special recognition. Feast your eyes on some amazing award winners.
This winning quilt was selected from all the first-place winners in the twelve categories. "Dignity" took the honors for Best in Show and was made by Veruschka Zarate. She based it on a statue. A truly unique feature was that the back of the quilt mirrored the front.
This award went to a quilt from any category that utilizes a modem design theme. Audrey Esarey's "Poppy Quilt" was selected for this award. Esarey stated that this was a flower quilt block using curved piecing. You might detect the slight color gradation that she used diagonally throughout the design.
This award is issued for excellent machine quilting that enhances the overall quilter's design. Audrey Esarey was a double winner this year with "Raspberry Roulette." She used two sets of hand-dyed graduated fabric. The grid quilting was done on the diagonal, offering a secondary design to contrast with the fabric.
The selected quilt must have at least 60% hand quilting and is judged by how it impacts the quilt. Heidi Parkes' "Yes More Please!" displayed intricate hand stitching while contrasting her "no" and "yes."
This award is offered to a quilter new to modern quilting who is innovative and outstanding overall. "I may be Square but not Fuddy-Duddy" by Jackie Pang was issued the breakthrough award. The quilt was a tribute to the quilter's 1970s childhood memories with retro hues and geometric shapes. The quilter noted "that a square can be innovative and anything but fuddy-duddy"
This award is issued to any quilt that failed to receive any category awards, but the judges feel it merits an award. The judges issued this award to Michelle Bartholomew for "Clamshell Jamboree." She started with the basic clamshell design and then made several changes to the design in the quilt, resulting in this award winner.
