Quilt Shops - Getting Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Quilt Shops - Getting Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Make something new! When I show my umbrella to anyone, they just can’t believe I made it. Granted, mine is way different from everyone else’s. While the others have a gorgeous array of fabrics and colors, I choose to make one for my son. A local quilt shop owner was in this class with us and she arranged with the teacher to get the pattern and supplies through her. The quilt shop owner now offers this unusual class through her shop!

Start a new group! Quilting Contessa has written in the past about shops starting guilds and bees, but this shop started a wool applique group. They’ve been meeting for about 3 years and the shop stocks patterns and wool to meet their needs. The selection of shops that support wool applique is not huge. In fact, a Facebook interest group has a state-by-state list of shops where wool is available.

This group draws from a 30+ mile radius and is active with charity as well as their own projects. This small banner is one of 60ish being made monthly for a nearby nursing home. There is a monthly theme for the banners, but each artist interprets the theme in her own way.

In her travels, Quilting Contessa has visited a couple of shops in the Mid-West with a new interpretation of "outside the zone." One of them has gowns hanging in the back of the shop and when we asked, we learned that the staffer was hemming a bridesmaid gown. Another carries kitchen gadgets and specific gift items that work well with the Bridal Registry that they host.

The body of knowledge of quilting will last your whole life – especially if you are willing to step out and try something new!
